What do you mean by this? I thought it is okay for PhotoRec to jump backward when it finds a new file.

You should be able to resume the recovery if you restart PhotoRec.
I restarted my PC but when I opened the terminal, PhotoRec started a NEW scan.

How can I resume the scan after restarting the computer?

The number of files recovered should increase before PhotoRec jumps back, so PhotoRec shouldn't be really stuck.
If there are bad sectors, it can be very time consuming, so it may be best to clone the disk before using PhotoRec. You can use ddrescue as described in https://www.cgsecurity.org ...

Is it possible to pause PhotoRec, turn linux off/on, and resume the scan?

Let's say I am over 100 hours into a scan and it needs to run for 100 more hours, but I really need to turn off linux without losing all the progress.

It seems to be possible to start a scan from any sector using the "expert mode", but it seems every time PhotoRec finds a file, it goes back and re ...

Hi, did you find any answer? I have a similar problem and I had to use PhotoRec which is not ideal for me.
