Re: 3TB HD deleted ext4 & formated NTFS

I forgot to post how this worked out.

Remy helped me and was able to recover 100% of the files using the marvelous Linux feature of mounting loopdevices.

Thanks fiona & remy. You helped me recover over 2TB of data.

Re: 3TB HD deleted ext4 & formated NTFS

Fiona,

I have attached the log and pasted the ext4 partition found that might be right. When I press P to look at the files it shows / but no files.

P ext4 2048 5860532223 5860530176
EXT4 Large file Sparse superblock Backup superblock, 3000 GB / 2794 GiB

I am willing to write this partition back ...

Re: 3TB HD deleted ext4 & formated NTFS

I scan using EFI GPT from the LiveCD. It still doesn't come up with what I believe is the correct ext4 partition. SEE LOG FROM EARLIER POST

So I need to Add (A) Partition with the proper sector information. Unfortunately TestDisk makes that a little confusing. I've written down the information from ...

Re: 3TB HD deleted ext4 & formated NTFS

Ok,

You just mentioned something that was driving me nuts! I couldn't understand why TestDisk didn't have Linux as a scan type. I am using a LiveCD with TestDisk 6.13 and the only scan types that are listed are:

Intel
EFI GPT
Humax
Mac
None
Sun
XBox

Do you know of a LiveCD that has version 6.14?

Re: 3TB HD deleted ext4 & formated NTFS

I was mistaken. Gparted says the disks are GPT already. Come to think of it they had to be because I set them up as one partition using all 3TB of space.

Next step?

Re: 3TB HD deleted ext4 & formated NTFS

I believe you are correct that the disk is currently a basic disk not a GPT disk.

No I have not been able to list my files by pressing p on the ext4 partition. I don't remember if I only had folders off the root of the drive or if there were any files to see directly on the root of the drive. I ...

Re: 3TB HD deleted ext4 & formated NTFS

Gotcha, thanks for the explanation. That makes sense.

Here is the screenshot and the current log that should have the "none" scan along with the other scans.

Thanks for the help Fiona.

Re: 3TB HD deleted ext4 & formated NTFS

Not home right now. No I haven't been able to list any files.

I have scanned using the EFI GPT partition type and it hasn't come up with what I think is the correct EXT4 partition information. I should be able to get you a screen shot when I get home.

Re: 3TB HD deleted ext4 & formated NTFS

I never heard back from anyone after attaching the TestDisk log. I have more information now.

You will see in the log that TestDisk does find some EXT4 superblocks but says they are unrecoverable. The information about those partitions doesn't look right to me though. So I deleted the NTFS ...

Re: 3TB HD deleted ext4 & formated NTFS

Here you go.

The reason I got into this mess is that I've been having trouble getting OpenSUSE 12.1 to work the way I want as a server. I'm new at linux but not with computers. So I've been doing a lot of installs on this machine. Luckily the 3TB drives haven't been partitioned or formatted much ...
