chkdsk. Windows reported the partition was locked, and asked it I wanted to unlock it. I said No, as it said it would delete open handles. I booted back up in Linux, and the files are gone. (!!!) I enabled expert mode briefly, to read the options and look them up. Then I disabled it. I never ran with expert mode enabled. I don't recall an unformat option. Linux is writing files to a Windows exFat partition on a Windows OS disk which are INVISIBLE to Windows. How do I make these files visible to Windows?

I ran PhotoRec (Linux) to recover some documents.
The first directory, recup_dir.1 contains a single entry, an empty directory named Recovery
Recup_dir.1 and recup_dir.2 contain many files, but no Recovery directory.
I'm making sure this is correct. I thought the first 500 files went to recup_dir ...
