I already did something similar which demonstrates that the disc can be seen (even when directly connected via a SATA connector).
I have a USB Linux device based on the Ubuntu distribution.
I can boot from that and the disc is seen.
Based on that success, are there any additional steps I can take ...

I am hoping that advice can be given based on the following details.
Problem arose after an automatic update by Windows 10.
Everything was okay before then ... which suggests that the SSD disc hardware is probably okay, i.e., the problem arose during the Windows software upgrade process.
