How does testdisk read sectors?
I was wondering how testdisk and also it appears dd reads sectors. The time out time is minutes long. Does it use bios calls or a call via linux kernel calls or what to read a sector from disk? the time out is outrageous. Can the retry count for sector read operations be changed?
Ubuntu has gotten very slow. Is there anyway to tell it not to try to read a sector if its bad more than a few times? It takes days to weed thru a drive with 7000 bad sectors :roll: . With 4 trys a sector an IBM with 640k running at 10mhz could do it in 20 minutes :) but Ubuntu 20 :oops: takes days ...

I see what you mean about speeds. a 100meg drive would scan fast. But its a 500gb drive on a sata in a machine that passmarks at 1980. THo it appears to have a lot of jumbled data and definitly the mbr wont even rewrite. Its amazing that testdisk can read some stuff off of the drive. What command DD ...

What is testdisk doing during parttion seeks or data recovery? Its frustrating to see no activity and it can take an hour after i tell it to stop. My machine takes over 20 minutes to show any response and reads of a disk take hours. File recovery takes hours. Its frustrating there is no evidence the ...
