Thanks for response.
I thought DDR rescue was a separate program. Will look at that.
So, apparently it isn't abnormal/unusual for testdisk to go on indefinitely without stopping.
Thanks for answering my question.

Re: testdisk keeps on for more than 2 days.
@ recuperation,
Thanks for response.
I put it into a new phone after stopping testdisk and the media files look intact.
HOWEVER, my question was about testdisk going on so long. Does it not have a built in method of stopping itself when it seems futile to continue?

testdisk keeps on for more than 2 days.
Firstly, I am a novice (eg, ignoramus) about the proper use of testdisk. I only used it briefly years ago.
I used photorec to find files on an 32 GB SD card. It ran for a number of hours and then reported a goodly number of files, which it saved to a file on my computer.

Great.
It would be nice if that point was made in the documentation.
Thanks again for the tool, the forum and the responses.

Re: Bizarre Change in Filesystem Type after Testdisk repair
So, when I run testdisk and see all these nonexistent/potential partitions on quick search or deeper search, should I attempt to "delete" them by telling testdisk to rewrite the partition table?
If yes, how do you recommend that I do this since marking them "D" and confirming with "Y" doesn't ...

Re: Bizarre Change in Filesystem Type after Testdisk repair
On the deeper search, it displays multiple extra partitions (10) and when I mark the 8 damaged ones for deletion and ask the program to write the change to the partition table, hit "Y" to confirm this and then quit test disk. After I reboot and rerun deeper search, the program still reports the same ...

I am trying to understand test disk better, partly because of my concerns about my hard drive and partly in order to give a presentation about it to our local Linux users group.

Re: Bizarre Change in Filesystem Type after Testdisk repair
But, why won't test disk delete the damaged partitions when I use the "wire" command?
I have tried this several times and on reboot, test disk again finds the same damaged partitions.
Thanks for comments and assistance.

Re: Bizarre Change in Filesystem Type after Testdisk repair
Hi again,
I appreciate the advice about not needing to maintain an extended partition. Note that I DON'T have one at this time (nor a swap partition). Both fdisk and gparted report two partitions (an NTFS [Type 7] and a Linux [Tyoe 83]). Only testdisk is detecting problems with these partitions and ...

Re: Bizarre Change in Filesystem Type after Testdisk repair
Hi again.
After using SpinRite, I ran the Hitachi Drive Fitness test on this hard drive. It found no errors with the drive.
I also tested using the smartmontools and again no problem was detected.
Then I backed up the files I care about.
Then, with Gparted (running from a live CD), I deleted the ...
