I did and as you said and have copied all my files to another external HDD. Now that I have performed this backup process how should I proceed to repair the partition table?

The partition is much larger than 1Gig, it uses the whole disk.
I did not use TestDisk/ undelete to list my files. I did a deepsearch to list my files.
I did not have a try to copy some large files off to another disk/partitions.

There was only one partition using the whole disk.
I did run Deep Search in TestDisk and was able to see my files (I was unable to see anything with the quick search).
