I can see the dat and data folders on my PC. Recognizing is not the problem. Opening them seems to be the problem. I will try the Linux if you think it may open the folders so they are readable and not just the dat or data folders.

Thanks for your reply. I do have a Linux machine with ubuntu. Can I open these files on that machine? I can put some dat and data files on a USB stick and see if I can open them. Or, should I go about this differently?

My windows home server died and will not let me reinstall. How can I recover the dat or data files? All the research I've done says I have to have WHS to read the files. Any help is appreciated.
