Did you have a headcreash?
If you have bad sectors or read errors, datarecovery software might hang.
Also you can check your disk using crystal disk info:
http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html
If you have bad sectors and photorec or testdisk hangs, you should clone your disk ...

Am I going about this the right way?
I have a 500 Gig 2.5 inch drive which was subjected to a mechanical shock. I've run photorec, and after a few days, recovered several thousand files, but it was going to take about eighty days to work its way through the whole disk.
