Re: Trouble recovering ext3 partition

I think the partition at 0/32/33 is the new ext4 partition which overwrote the ext3 partition I am trying to recover. I'm not having any trouble mounting this partition.

Re: Trouble recovering ext3 partition

Thanks so much for your help Fiona! I've run photorec and it was able to recover about 500GB of data, which is impressive but far from the 1.5TB I've lost. It also wasn't able to preserve the file names or folder structure :|

What does testdisk mean when it reports that it has found an

Re: Trouble recovering ext3 partition

I tried running with "align partition = no" and "partition type = none" but still to no avail. One of my old partitions is recognized and is readable while the other is recognized, but I can't list it's files. Here are some snippets from the log (it is too large to paste and I'm not allowed to ...

Re: Trouble recovering ext3 partition

I must have misinterpreted your advice from yesterday. You wrote:

TestDisk doesn't let you recover a partition which ends after disk limit.
In some cases I've had a trick to increase the amount of cylinder using the menu geometry to make your partition accessible and at least to have a try to list ...

Re: Trouble recovering ext3 partition

I ran deep analyze with an increased number of cylinders and "align partition = no" overnight.

New options :
Dump : No
Align partition: No
Expert mode : No

Re: Trouble recovering ext3 partition

Thanks for the tips, remy, I'll try them out tonight. I'm currently running deep analyze with an increased cylinder count per fiona's advice (I randomly guessed 245000). When I change the "align to cylinder boundary" option to "no", should I keep the modified disk geometry or reset it back to the ...

Re: Trouble recovering ext3 partition

Thanks for the quick reply Fiona. Looks like the attachment didn't come through.

What does it mean for a partition to end after the disk limit? How do I figure out the correct number of cylinders to set?

Here's the full text of the log file:

Trouble recovering ext3 partition

Hello! First off, thanks so much for the wonderful product.

I've got a 2TB disk which had two ext3 partitions on it until I accidentally installed Linux Mint over them. One partition was 15GB for the OS and the other was the rest of the disk for media. Mint quickly and quietly reformatted the disk ...
