a bad Sata/IDE-Usb connector caused it to change format.
A faulty file system and bad sectors can cause that testdisk hang during a scan and copying files.
Did you get read errors too?
Can you check your disk using crystaldiskinfo?

I've been trying to get a hang of the testdisk utility for about 10Hrs now, but seems i'm just messing it up, i'm extremely drained,s o my typing might be crap.
