if this helps also this is what I see when I hooked it up to an external USB to another computer. I can see it, but it won't give it a drive letter or be able to access it.

Fiona - Finally got Testdisk to run with a livecd. Same issues with read errors

Cgrenier - it runs quietly, but makes a humming.. maybe slight grinding sound every 5 secs or so.. if the head is dmg.. means I prob have to go professional recovery route?

Tried Bootmed, and UBCD .. no luck so far to get a workin livecd (USB) ... which one do you recommend? Both seem to get to a point and stall and do nothing before even gettin to Testdisk.

changed the head.. now its analyzing the cylinders! thank you. seems like its going to be a long analysis. 6/12910 in like 25 mins.

Was using my laptop then froze it and crashed. Tried to restart, now it says error , operating system not found. So i found testdisk and now trying it. It found my HD when i connected my laptop HD to another computer. Got to the part where to do a quick search. But it hasn't moved since I started ...
