As a followup, I finally found instructions on this site for using pdisk to recreate my deleted partition. I could not find them directly but I used google.
Opening pdisk and the using numbers that I got from testdisk.
Commands were:
sudo pdisk /dev/rdisk1
e(dit)
c(reate)
i(nitialize)
"number of ...

I don't know if this is helpful. But if you are having problems reading your drive. I have used Spinrite by grc.com to recover unreadable spots on drives. Running an analysis first then making sure all sectors are readable. Then maybe you can recover with the other tools available. I have used it ...
