ahh I understand, but I cannot run any windows based install DVD or recovery tool - they all end up in the repair loop evidenced by my first link I'm afraid. I think the ONLY way I will be able to re-install windows from a DVD will be to wipe all partitions and reformat the drive?

I ran it initially before using testdisk but the have various logs you can see before and after testdisk. I will try to run bootrec.exe but I don't think I can get into windows recovery console

OK so eventually got in and did as you suggest marked middle partition as boot, write, quit. Reboot (removing Gparted Live DVD) and get Recovery> your PC/Device needs to be repaired Error 0xc0000225
