You can try testdisk to recover the HFS partition. Once it's done, if the filesystem is corrupted, try PhotoRec but unfortunately it will not recover the original filenames.

I have more or less the same problem.

I have an external SDD harddrive (the harddrive from my broken MacBook), HFS+ formatted. Before the MacBook crashed, I changed the main user account, which deleted all (hidden) files. One of them was a xxxx.manager file (manager.io is an accounting program).

I only need THAT file, nothing else. Is the fact that it is an SDD drive a problem?
Some recovery programs only let me search for common filetypes, not exotic once like ".manager" files. Can TestDisk recover this file and how do I do that?

testdisk will not help and photorec can be usefull only if it know this file format.
Can you share some .manager files ? (Dummy data is ok)
