Unable to read undeleted files

#1 Post by poicub »

I have used TestDisk (6.14) to undelete a number of jpg and mov files from a disk image of my SD card. However, as in similar posts, I am unable to open the jpg or mov files.

The SD card (from a Nikon D5100 camera) was originally inserted into a card reader on a Win7 machine which downloaded the mov files but not the jpeg files and deleted all files on the card.

I immediately made two images of the card on my Mac (OS X 10.7.4 - lion), one read only and the other read/write.

I tried using PhotoRec (6.14) on both images, but was unable to recover any files (I searched for jpg, mov, and tif files). I then used TestDisk by which I was seemingly able to recover all the files marked deleted from the image.

The jpg files appear to be the correct size on the disk (approximately 4MB each), but I can not open them in software such as Preview (Mac) or Gimp. The only difference I see is in filenames where normally the camera saves files as DSC_nnnn.JPG and the undeleted files (and in the TestDisk interface) are _SC_nnnn.JPG.

Thank you in advance for any ideas.

Did you create an Image using TestDisk / Advanced / Image Creation?
And did you work with your image like described here;
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Media_Image

If you delete a file, the first character/letter might be removed from the file.
Would it be possible to have a try to copy all files from your sd card instead?
You shouldn't write anything to your card,
Only to copy your deleted files to another intact destination/partition/disk.
Standard path is your testdisk folder.
