testdisk says no disk found

Hello,
I regularly use testdisk to undelete files or repair corrupted partition, and I am very happy with it.
Unfortunately I just tried it on my new dell ladtop under ubuntu, and running
> testdisk
I get the message "No harddisk found".
When I make explicit the location of the device (recovered using fdisk -l) with
> testdisk /dev/nvme0n1
I get "Unable to open file or device /dev/nvme0n1: Permission denied"
The permission are as follows:
> ls -l /dev/nvme0n1
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 259, 0 Nov 16 21:52 /dev/nvme0n1
photorec gives same messages
The disk is the internal disk on which my system is running, it does not appear to be corrupted.
The symptom appear to be similar to an issue with "System Integrity Protection" on mac os but
I'm on ubuntu 16.04 LT
Some help or alternative suggestion to undelete the file I accidentaly remove would be very helpful !
Thanks,
Gilles
