No partition data is seen

#1 Post by Doug »

I am hoping that advice can be given based on the following details.

Problem arose after an automatic update by Windows 10.
Everything was okay before then ... which suggests that the SSD disc hardware is probably okay, i.e., the problem arose during the Windows software upgrade process.
Otherwise, we have to believe in coincidences, i.e., that the disc hardware just happened to fail at the same time.

Following the Window "upgrade", a blue screen with rotating dots was seen - which continued without end - it being necessary to switch the PC off.
Thereafter, unable to boot the PC or get into Safe Mode ...

Installed Win 10 on a completely new disc.

The PC boots successfully when only this new disc with the operating system is present.

When the original problematic disc is present in addition to the new disc, it does not appear to be possible to boot-up the PC, even although the new disc is configured as being the primary boot device.
Consequently, it is not possible to mount the problematic disc directly in the PC via its SATA connector to look at it.

However, I have an external disc drive box with a USB interface.
When the problematic disc is put in that box, it can be connected via a USB port to the running PC.
It is not visible in Windows File Explorer.
However, it can be seen in Windows device manager, refer graphic:
(the size seems to be correctly identified and Windows device manager also reports that "This device is working properly")

Using testdisc, I have done the "Quick Search" for partitions and also the "Deeper search".
Neither finds any partition.
"Read errors" are reported as in the following example screen:

I should much appreciate any advice as to what else I should do?
On request, further details or a log file can be provided.

I reiterate that the disc was working fine before Windows decided to do an automatic update!
This gives me hope that the disc hardware should be okay, whilst some sort of software corruption has occurred.

I run testdisc for [Intel] (which comes up as the default).
Maybe I need to change that or something in or Geometry settings?

Many thanks for any assistance!

It looks like an hardware problem...
Disconnect the external disk, create Linux Live USB device (ie. fedora), boot from it and check if the second disk can be seen.
If it failed, you should contact a data recovery company.

I already did something similar which demonstrates that the disc can be seen (even when directly connected via a SATA connector).
I have a USB Linux device based on the Ubuntu distribution.
I can boot from that and the disc is seen.

Based on that success, are there any additional steps I can take?
[Ideally, using your software tools - I currently have very little knowledge about Linux!]

By the way, I also ran PhotoRec - it ran to completion without any error messages but did not find any files.
