EXT4 partition gone on Ubuntu 20.04 Raid 5 array after power failure

#1 Post by slownis »

4 disks - all 2tb WD Green drives of differing ages in a raid 5 array for a total of 6gb.

Power outage the other day during a period of heavy write.

Numerous attempts to reassemble or re-create the array have been unsuccessful. One disk shows nothing raid-like. Another disc shows raid, but has some concerning SMART data. 3 disks still had the raid flag set, but any attempt to re-assemble with only 3 drives plus 1 missing results in a non-mountable array with no recognizable file system. I've attempted using backup blocks to no avail. the only good news is that the array / disks have never been written to since the initial power disruption - having never been able to mount them successfully.

Most of the 6TB partition was backups of HD movies, but also 13 years of photos and home videos gone - no backups. Yes, I know, I deserve to be flogged.

Any other tips to get my partition back?

If you have recreated the Raid array, the disks may have re-synchronize. If there were using the wrong setup, you may have lost your data.
There are commercial tools to recover broken, search for raid reconstructor, google will list several disk utilities...
