Dual Boot Mishap; Missing Partitions

#1 Post by atuolink »

So I was trying to dual boot windows 10 and Pop_OS, as I wanted to customize my shell and optimize work flow, and I was trying to do a transitional install and increase the Pop_OS partition as I moved things over.

I carelessly ended up clearing the MFT partition table following instructions not thinking about what I was doing. So I did something probably even more careless and rolled with it anyway and created 4 small partitions I Needed to run an OS when I probably realistically could have run it off the USB.

I am missing a lot of info/scripting projects from windows. This is on a 500 GB ssd, if the logs show any other drives I apologize that'd be my 1TB hard drive which is used as extra storage.

I've tried EFI GPT and Intel Deep scans with differing degrees of failiure.

Right before I went to install Pop_OS I ensmalled my partition for windows to be something closer to 300-350 GB and I feel like I've located it, but it provides me the error "File System May Be Damaged"

Here's the latest deep scan EFI GPT log:

This may be too much data I think the partition I am looking for is mentioned in these lines:

Re: Dual Boot Mishap; Missing Partitions

#2 Post by cgrenier »

TestDisk has found the following 2 partitions
MS Data 34823 757147647 757112825
NTFS found using backup sector, blocksize=4096, 387 GB / 361 GiB
MS Data 34816 975696781 975661966
NTFS found using backup sector, blocksize=4096, 499 GB / 465 GiB

According to your description, the 387 GB / 361 GiB size is probably correct. I think the location of the second partition is correct.

Assuming you can afford to loose your Pop_OS, I will manually add the following partition (TestDisk, Analyse, Quick Search, Stop, 'a')
MS Data 34816 757147647
Set this partition as P(rimary)
On next screen, choose Write and confirm, choose RebuildBS, List.
If you can see your files, choose Write, confirm, Quit and reboot.
If it doesn't work, try PhotoRec on the partition.

Just want to clarify on a couple of things, when you say "assuming you can afford to lose your Pop_OS" does that mean before I start any of this I should boot into a bootable Linux USB? If so do you reccomend one for this type of thing?
Additionally, I am somewhat wondering on the second section of what you wrote, when I first did a deep scan and attempted to reach files it says the FIle System may be damaged so I couldn't preview files, with the instructions you sent me there's a chance I could see those files?

Just googled photorec, I see so it can help me recover certain files, is there a certain setup I should go about in regards to doing that? Like wiping my HDD too and transferring files from photorec over to the HDD? I know I may be getting a little bit a head of myself so this secondary part of the question isn't super important/needs to be answered, I'm sure I can find a guide online for it.

Sorry if I'm coming off as a little silly, I'm new to linux but I want to make the transfer.

Earlier Edits/Versions of my additional reply:
OK so I was able to instal caine on a live USB and its wokring, WHen I go to finish a search it says the entire drive cannot be recovered, however I go to continue and see the options, none are showing up as the 387 GB drive. However if i do a deep search it does show up.

WHen I do press A it shows a mainly blank screen with the word "Unknown" and the number 1 with 2 numbers next to it 976773167 and 976773167

Should I just add an unknown drive make it primary and make the started sectors and end sector 757147647 and 757112825 respectively? Although that sounds wrong. Maybe the starting sector would be 34816? Upon re-reading it seems like 34186 should be the starting sector. I just want to make sure before I make any bad moves.

I should note that earlier when i first got test disk running on caine, testdisk said it could not do anything due to it being write protected, but that seems to have disappeared. Let me know what you think i should do like maybe scanning with INtel PC instead?

I am appending a new log , although I'm sure the results are majority similar, I figure I should. This time I put it on pastebin as I wanted to make things look better, let me know if I should've just posted it here instead. (Removed lines of the log that were repeating 13GB/12Gib)

I did some troubleshooting as you reccomended, I added the parittion manually, in attempting to change it to a primary drive, it reported that it could not open filesysem. Filesystem seems damaged.
Should I proceed with the build even if it's damaged?

Alright, so I guess now I'm just unsure if I should add unknown, or if I should somehow try to do a File System repair as on the PDF. For 2 reasons.

1.) The PDF guide states it may be risky as it'll remove invalid files
2.) I couldn't run chkdsk as a I have a live session for linux. Let me know your thoughts.

Edit: I also wanted to say I noticed you post a lot around here, guess that makes sense since you're the admin, thank you for taking the time to help me.
