accidentally formatted ext4 into NTFS during syst restore

#1 Post by NotAgain »

I had a dualboot Win10 and LinuxMint 20. Each os on its own ssd.
I tried to make a system restore of W10. Accidently choosed the LM 20 ssd. So this ext4 ssd is now formatted to NTFS with W10 on it.
I am aware that many of the data will be overwritten. I hope to recover as much as possible of my personal files.
But i am not sure which procedure to use Partition Recovery or File undelete. I reckon LM20 is lost. So partition restore might be not the way?!

Regularly deleting files is a defined process with a defined outcome. Tools to undelete files rely on a healthy file system which you do not have.

hmmm, thanks recuperation, not sure how unhealthy the situation is since i don't quite understand youre answer. Thats why i would like to add some information i have found after posting, while using testdisk 7.1 on live linux boot usb.
Originally the LM20ssd was 465gb ext4.
The restore made 350gb unallocated of the previous LM20 ssd, (because original win10 ssd drive was shrinked to make a smaller backup.)

Does this change a bit in the situation to be able to restore files?
Or is the Linux data gone?

Forecasts are pointless except for certain encryption cases.
