So I got this external hard drive which I converted from MBR to GPT. But something went wrong and now it's a GPT disk with unallocated space.
I tried running test disk but keeps giving a message similar to this:
Before I ran this test I made a volume from the unallocated space (which is RAW and unreadable).
Any idea how to get the files on this disk back? Wondershare Recoverit does seem to be able to read files from the drive, but unfortunately Recoverit's not free.

Read the manual and the wiki.
If Testdisk fails try Photorec and/or use the commercial recovery solution of your choice.
