Re: Recovery of partition

It seems that you now have testdisk running under Windows 7 (the 80 GB drive?) and your 500 GB drive is now external .. so you've made some progress.

disk_get_size_win32 IOCTL_DISK_GET_LENGTH_INFO(/dev/sda)=80026361856 (80GB)
disk_get_size_win32 IOCTL_DISK_GET_LENGTH_INFO(/dev/sdb)=500107862016 (500GB)

It is easy to be wise after the event but having experienced several incidents with damaged disks I now keep a number of pre-burned CD's at hand to assist in recovery.

If you install unetbootin on windows 7 (there is a linux version) you can quickly burn different rescue disks to CD or USB to help in recovery.

http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

It sounds like you need boot recovery.

http://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair-cd/home/Home/

Can you burn this onto a CD or USB flash and try to recover your boot.

Fiona should give more insights into the testdisk.log you posted.

If you still can't recover you might try installing this commercial program ..

http://www.stellarinfo.com/linux-data-recovery.htm

on windows 7 to then analyse (not recover) your external 500 GB drive (you don't need to purchase at this stage - only try it out).

If you can see your ext4 file structure then this shows that they are not lost and you can continue learning how to apply (free) testdisk.

Also look at this for partition recovery (although you can use testdisk for partition recovery).

http://www.easeus.com/partition-recovery/

Sometimes it is more cost effective to purchase recovery tools if you are really stuck.

Re: the question on prompts to check disk .. I would let any checks run through to completion (which might take some time). Don't interrupt the tests.

Dear Fiona,

Thanks! now I have examined all my partitions and I have found -

Boot sector
Status : OK

Sectors are identical - For all logical partitions and each partition is now accessible through windows 7.

However left with only single problem of grub error shows following message while booting -

GNU GRUB version 0-97-71 FC15

[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported for the first word, TAB lists possible command completions.
Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device / filename. ]

grub>

display freezes to this screen.

Humble request to kindly resolve my only one problem. How it can be solved? :? :? :?

I will be very thankful to you with great appreciation !!

Note .. this is not a reply from Fiona!

If you are multi booting (Windows and Linux) you can install EasyBCD into Windows.

Use the free version .. http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/

This will look for linux kernels and presents a multi boot menu on booting.

There are other ways such as Live CD boot-repair-disk .. see earlier link posted above.

It sounds like you need boot recovery.

Dear Sir,

Please note that I have a pen drive made bootable for ubuntu and i have installed ubuntu with this pen drive, when i boot using that pen drive then i have got the options for multi boot and i can easily access any of the OS, however without pen drive the GRUB error poped as

GNU GRUB version 0-97-71 FC15

[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported for the first word, TAB lists possible command completions.
Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device / filename. ]

and if unable to boot then how I can run the software EasyBCD that you have specified. I have only available with grub prompt like -

grub>

Kindly help at this moment. I am begging for help !!

You did not reply to my earlier assumption.
It seems that you now have testdisk running under Windows 7 (the 80 GB drive?) and your 500 GB drive is now external .. so you've made some progress.
So to clarify my understanding ..

You have swapped your internal (500 GB) failed drive with an earlier 80 GB drive which has Windows 7?
You have created (perhaps by using unetbootin) a USB bootable ubuntu?
You can now boot into your pen drive and run ubuntu and inspect all your files on the internal drive and external drive?
When you remove your pen drive and bootup from your internal drive (80 GB or 500 GB) you get the prompt grub>

If you cannot boot into Windows then you cannot install EasyBCD as suggested .. but you should be able to download boot-repair-disk *.iso using another working computer and then run boot-repair-disk. Or use one of the repair distros in unetbootin.

Do you have a Windows 7 repair disk to repair Windows boot?

Note: Running the command sudo fsdisk -l from your pen drive and posting the results would give us more information to work on.

Dear Sir,

Here are the clarifications for your kind referecne -

1. Now there is only internal 500GB HDD connected to my PC in which there are multi OS.
2. I have a pen drive with ubuntu installation.
3. Yes I can expect the files / partitions in the internal drive.
4. After removal of the pen drive booting takes place with the internal 500 GB HD only and freezes to grub prompt,
however with pen drive all the OS in internal 500 GB HD are working fine and accessible with booting choice.

I think the suitable grub (MBR) is present in the pen drive that is needed and which are not in the internal HDD. Can I copy the grub from pen drive to my internal 500GB HDD? so that booting takes place easily without pen drive. If yes how to this? it is my rough guessing.

You kindly suggest better option. waiting for your reply.
