Super slow external drive, opened it up and it shows as raw

#1 Post by Dynejonas »

Hello.

I have a 320gb external WD disk. It's the 2,5" type with only usb connenction.
I noticed it had some big problems when I connected it to my computer. I took 5 minutes to show up.
I tried copying all the files off the disk but it only got 16 kb/s so it would have taken forever.
Then I opened up the case so I could connect it directly to my internal sata, thought that might give it better speed.
It shows up as raw. I go ahead and assign a new drive to give it a drive letter, maybe that would let me explore it.
Nope. Now I have to format it windows says. Used Testdisk to try and rebuid the partition table, but it didn't find any.
I am currently running PhotoRec trying to copy the disk, but there seems to be a lot of bad sectors. Estimated time 38 hours.
Is this the right way to go about things?

Sometimes it was possible to copy data from a damaged disk using TestDisk.
It doesn't stress your disk as much as datarevovery software reading each sector.
Would it be possible to use TestDisk and upload another screen from TestDisk / Analyse.
If your partition table is still ok, you can have a try to copy your data containing file names and directories.
Infos will follow.

I'd need a photo from TestDisk / Analyse.
Easily confirm in testdisk through until you see the menu "Analyse" checked.
Confirm with Enter and upload another photo.
It's your current partition table and if your partitions are still in your partition table, you can diagnose your boot sector.
Info will follow.

I did go through Testdisk / analyse /quick search /deeper search
But it says the same thing "No partiotion found or selected for recovery"
Is this what you are asking for?

This is what it says when I just go to the analyse menu.

Your partition table is empty.
Without partition, a boot sector diagnose is not possible.
If you have no partition, no drive letter will be assigned and your partition can't appear as RAW.
TestDisk for windows is cygwin based and the behavior can be different to windows.
Would it be possible to scan your disk (Deeper Search) using TestDisk?
If TestDisk hangs due to read errors or damaged file system, please let me know.
Also, some information about, how is your disk listed in your disk management console would be helpful.
If your partition table is empty, then it would be possible that your disk appears as not initialized in your disk management console.
Since W2k, windows only can handle initialized disks.

Please let me know.

Yes it does appears as not initialized in disk management.
I am sorry for the Norwegian language, but you are perhaps familiar with disk management.
I am currently running a deeper scan.
