Data recovery from HDD with no partition tables - WTD?

I have a 120GB SATA laptop drive that got it's Vista Business partition deleted some how. I booted the machine to Linux Live cd and ran Fdisk and it said that there were no partitions on the drive. I don't know what was there before but I would like to see how this software works and what I can manage to retrieve from this drive.
So, where do I start when there are no partitions? Do I create a partition or what?
I'd like to play around with this drive in Windows and Linux and ideally I would like to have a bit for bit image of this drive so I can work on that instead of the drive itself. Is that possible? I don't thinkg DD-Rescue will copy a drive with no partitions on it.
Where do I begin with this?
