weird partition scan

#1 Post by makeparts »

Hi folks - just found this tool - It's my last resort - Thank you to all of the participants and authors!

Maybe I can get some of you big brains out there to share some advice :)

ok, so here's what I had, when it worked:
640GB Harddisk(596.xx usable) in a Dell XPS notebook, dual boot Win7x64 and Ubuntu 12.04
5 partitions:
1) Dell diag partition 102Mb
2) Windows Recovery Primary, Active, 14.65GB
3) Windows OS, Primary, 354.95GB
4) Linux, Primary, 220.56GB
5) Linux Swap, 5.92GB

It came with Win7x64, and I loaded Ubuntu on it...I believe GRUB2 is loaded into the Recovery Partition, since that is the one that was Active.

I have some Acronis backups, but I am struggling to get them restore...this am, I was half asleep and blew away away the 1st 3 partitions :( This was done with Gparted :( totally my bad.

I have done NOTHING else to the disk...I have booted from a Ubuntu 12.04 USB stick, and loaded TestDisk static on it..

I ran the deep discovery with TestDisk 6.14-WIP, and it's saying scary things:

Structure: Bad. Use Up/Down Arrow keys to select partition.
Use Left/Right Arrow keys to CHANGE partition characteristics:
*=Primary bootable P=Primary L=Logical E=Extended D=Deleted
Keys A: add partition, L: load backup, T: change type, P: list files,
Enter: to continue
ext4 blocksize=4096 Large file Sparse superblock, 236 GB / 220 GiB
Before the deep discovery I DID play around trying to get the partitions the correct type, but I have not written anything to the disk.

Where did these extra partitions come from? Before I do anything else, does anyone have any advice for me?

thanks for any advice in advance
