Hi - I'm following your instructions from CG's "damaged hard disk" wiki page under the OS X section and am currently running dd on a 250GB WD Passport drive. How long should this run? It's been running for one day now. I can see the bytes transferred but the next two lines are

dd: /dev/disk4: Input/output error

I can tell that the bytes are changing but how can I tell if anything is actually getting transferred or how long this will take. I don't want to stop if something is actually happening.

Disk with bad sectors are very long to clone. It can take days or even weeks.
It's one of the reason why it's better to use GNU ddrescue, there is a progress indicator and you can stop and resume the copy.
