TEstDisk not working

#1 Post by johnswolter »

This is my second attempt to post this problem to this form. The 1st was dropped by the server. I had just registered and logged in for the first time.

TestDisk crashed immediately in Win 7 Standard Home ed. Used admin command prompt in TestDisk directory. testdisk_win results in win 7 crash window.

Download directory is off .../Documents directory which is longer than expected with standard downloads directory. Things are there for historic reasons.

Win 7 64-bit Standard Home Ed
Anti-Virus turned off
Defective USB WD 1140 2T plugged into 3.0 USB

Does your disk crash immediately if you connect it via USB?
Might be possible if your file system is faulty that windows or tetsdisk crashes immediately if you're trying to access (read/write) your file system.
In case you can try a Live-CD like knoppix (linux) to have another try to access your disk without crashing.
Sometimes disabling everything at startup and services using msconfig helped too?
Disabling services using msconfig, you should activate that little box, hide microsoft services.
Otherwise it might be possible that windows doesn't start anymore.

Please let me know.

This issue occurs without the USB external drive connected. All partitions are tested & appear in good working order.

The software version is TestDisk 6.14 for Windows. My OS is Windows 7 Home Prem. Ed. with service package 1 and all recent updates installed.

Using Safe mode Startup does not change the situation.

I used the System Rescue LiveCD latest version but I think TestDisk on it is slightly older. The latest Parted Magic LiveCD has the most recent.

These LiveCDs did not detect the a USB external WD My Book 1140 2T drive.

Why are my postings delayed for viewing?
