Recover Data by Reformatted External Hard disk

#1 Post by puerapuliae »

Hello,
I am trying to get back data from an external Hard Disk i just formatted by mistake.
I bought a new apple macbook and i used this external hard disk, formatted by windows pc, to transfer data from
my old pc to mac.
Later. I used hard disk for backing up mac data but i was not aware that, for doing that, Time Machine application of mac had to reformat hard disk in his own filesystem format so my old data were apparently deleted, i mean i cannot see them. I found in your forum very help todo retrieved by "http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Data_Rec ... onRecovery

run TestDisk,
select the hard disk and the partition type
choose Advanced
select the partition
choose Type,
enter the value corresponding to the previous filesystem
choose Boot
choose RebuildBS
List
If you can see your files, choose Write and confirm
In Analyse, choose to rewrite the partition with the correct partition type.

but i don't know what kind of partition type and filesystem to choose in the step "choose Type", in am confident but any suggestion is welcome. Let me know if you need any more information
Thank you in advance for your support and for the great tool you developed and shared
Bye, Tonno

I bought a new apple macbook and i used this external hard disk, formatted by windows pc, to transfer data from

Previously PC formatted partitions require partition table type Intel.
In case if you're using an Apple, after selecting your disk, choose the appropriate partition table type Intel!
Go to the menu Advanced and Type.
In the menu Type proceed with enter to continue.
At the right, your cursor will be blinking.
Type your previous partition type.
It doesn't a matter, if you don't know it.
Because, it's only a diagnose.
So you can test both, either NTFS or FAT32.
If you see your cursor blinking, type 07 (zero - seven) for NTFS or 0c (zero - c) for FAT32.
Press ok to leave the menu.
Repeat your diagnose using Boot / Rebuild BS.
Go to List and check your data.
If you receive an error message, please let me know.

If Rebuild BS doesn't work, you can have a try finding more partitions using Deeper Search.

Just as long as you don't confirm at write, you're not going to change anything.
Don't confirm at Repair NTFS or FAT.
So you will not change anything to your file system either.
