500GB Buffalo Ministation Cyclic Redundancy Error

#1 Post by AdrianPeter »

Plugged in my 500GB External Hard-drive, came up with error Cyclic Redundancy Error - Do you want to format the disk. I said no, and have tried various methods for getting hold of the data on the disk, which includes using EasyUS Data Recovery Wizard. It bombed out. Nothing has worked thus far.
Now I am trying testdisk, and still no results. Any help is highly appreciated.

1.I run testdisk.
2.Choose the disk
3.Choose the table type
4.Comes up with message Partition: Read Error
5.Then I do a quick search.
6.Say Yes to searched partitions created under Vista or Later.
7. Get a error, Analyse Cylinder 1/60800:00%
Read Error at 0/241/1 (lba=15183)

I have tried Photorec, I choose the disk, but the Partition is stated as "P Unknown". Any ideas wha the issue might be. Now it is reading sectors, but all it says is Error reading sector...and it estimates that there will be days to run still. Any ideas would be highly highly appreciated!

Many thanks
Adrian
PS. I have attached some of the screen shots of messages when running testdisk and photorec.

Your message "partition read error" says that you have no partition.
It looks like that your MBR and partition table is not readable.
That's why you got an Unknown partition type in PhotoRec.
Is Secure Lock Ware (encryption software) used on your Buffalo Ministation?
Until yet, you should avoid to stress your HDD.
Can you test another enclosure or 2.5 inches HDD kit to check for CRC errors?

Many thanks for the quick reply.

A such, I'm pretty sure there is no securelock software on there, but I have removed all Buffalo tools and utilities just to be sure.As to test another enclosure or 2.5 inches HDD kit to check for CRC errors - I'm not sure what you mean by this...sorry limited knowledge when it comes to these things? The following message on Windows just appeared when In rebooted my computer, and plugged in the external:
"I:\ is not accessible. Volume does not contain a recognized file system. Make sure all required drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted." Is this just more of the same, or something else?

I've seen some cases where the enclosure caused the CRC-Errors.
Connecting the disk internally or use another intact enclosure solved the problem and the CRC-Errors were gone.
So it was possible to diagnose the disk using TestDisk.
But it's only intended for diagnosis purposes, to get rid of CRC-Errors.

Another solution might be to create an image to another disk.
But it only makes sense, if you don't have too much read errors.

I will try to create an image disk and see what happens!

Thanks!
