I can see the partition i want to recover. I've successfully used TestDisk to recover files from it. This is my old laptop hdd that i placed into an external drive case hooked up via USB (if that matters). I will post screenshots in case someone can tell me what's going on. I appreciate any help!

Drive seems too small? I think the parameters may be off?? The highlighted partition in the second capture is the partition i would like to restore.

I've tried setting the partition to primary bootable and/or primary and writing but it didn't seem to do anything.

That unrecoverable partition might be found through any remnant and displayed as unrecoverable, because it's beyond your disk limit.
Can be ignored!
I'd need another screen from TestDisk / Analyse.
It's your current partition structur/partition table.
Then, I can compare, which partition is in your partition table.
Also, after Deep Search, please check each partition and press p to have a try to list your data.
Please let me know, which partition lists your data?

The partition with my data is the highlighted one in the second picture. I ran a deep search last night and checked it this morning. It seemed to find the same exact 2 partitions that are shown in the second picture.

From what i can tell, the top partition in the second screen is set as the active partition, at least the numbers match in the first screen.

I'll post more screenshots when this evening when i get home.

Thanks for the reply!

Here's the shot of the analyze screen. It shows the partition with my files on it set as primary boot. Windows still tells me it needs to be formatted,

Please let me know which partition contain your data.
What you can do first;
Currently there is a windows partition in your partition table.
But the boot sector is not valid.
Might be possible to repair it.
You can do that using TestDisk / Advanced and Boot.
If the backup of the boot secor ist Ok you can use Backup BS to copy the backup of the boot sector over the boot sector and should be repaired.
Always list your data using the menu List under the menu Advanced and Boot.
Only do something if you're able to list your data.
If both, your boot sector and its backup are bad, you can run Rebuild BS to have a try to rebuild your boot sector.
If you're able to list your data, you can use Write.
