HDD - NTFS partition overwritten - disk seems too small!

#1 Post by Citan »

Hi everyone !

As many others, I discovered Testdisk and this forum as a way to resolve a partition problem. While Testdisk gives me a clear light of hope, I'd be grateful for some explanations and advices on the steps to follow.

FACTS
I own an external, 2,5 inches 2TB hdd (1,8 Tio). I had it formatted as a unique NTFS partition covering nearly all space (except for a few Gio that I kept at end of disk, in case I wanted someday to install a live system).

Last week, I wanted to install the latest Ubuntu on my computer, by first putting it on a small external drive (a key of 1,8 Gio). You'll guess what happened... I chose the wrong device in the live-system creation tool and erased my 2TB.

Hopefully Testdisk is here. Following the recommandations (unmounted disk and such), I runned it. It first see the new FAT32 partition, only with Deeper Search does it see other partition. Finally, testdisk lists...
- the all new FAT32 partition;
- a HFS - NTFS partition which I suppose is my "good" partition;
- a FAT16 partition, coming from whoknowhere;
- a FAT12 partition, idem...

So news seems good, he sees a NTFS partition. Still, 2 problems.
- Testdisk displays "The Harddisk (2000 GB / 1863 GiB) seems too small! (<2422 GB / 2256 GiB)." Not sure what it means but doesn't seem very good.
- It says "NTFS found using backup sector, blocksize=4096, 1979 GB / 1843. But when I "enter it" with P to list files, its says "Can't open filesystem. Filesystem seems damaged".

So, with this, I'm not sure what is the right next step. If any can help troubleshoot this it will be much appreciated.
The full testdisk log (2 scans with different options) and some screenshot are accessible through this link (I can attach them directly if preffered).

- la FAT32 créée par l'outil d'Ubuntu ;
- une HPFS - NTFS qui semble être la bonne ;
- une partition FAT12 (????) ;
- une partition FAT16 (?????).

Deux soucis :
- Il m'indique The Harddisk (2000 GB / 1863 GiB) seems too small! (<2422 GB / 2256 GiB).

Re: HDD - NTFS partition overwritten - disk seems too small!

Hi again, thanks for accepting the thread.

I saw in other threads that in fact you always insert logs and screenshots since easier (in spite of added thread length). So I updated the opening post. Thanks in advance for your help!
