Crystal disk info is a very quick process and only intended to display your health status.
PhotoRec is a part of TestDisk and you'll find it within your testdisk folder.
It's only for datarecovery purposes.
You should recover your data to a healthy disk or partition.
Standard is your testdisk folder where PhotoRec creates folders like recup_dir1 containig your data.
So it only reads your affected disk and doesn't change anything.
Fragmetation should be low.

I've no idea about buffalo data recovery?
You can also check the disk manufacturer, if they have a diagnostic tool to determine your case of warranty.
There should be a free version of hdtune available for doownload, where you can run an error scan against your disk surface.
Damaged sectors or blocks are displayed red.
But this is depend on you.

Ran the standard version of CrystalDiskInfo. This is the result:

Apparently, only the C5 row (the one I highlighted) has an error according to the blue/yellow circles.

Thanks for the quick reply; you answered even before I finished the previous post. I like that. Hopefully the error could be quickly and easily fixed...

About the PhotoRec, can I restore specific files anytime with it? Does that mean that I can access my hard disk as a read-only file storage that can be used anytime, only slower?

About hdtune, can it fix the hard disk, or it only detects errors?

Sorry for having so many questions; hope you aren't flustered or such.

hdtune only scans your disk for errors and displays them.
First of all you should run PhotoRec.
It only reads your disk and copys files into your testdisk.folder.
It doesn't keep file names and directories/folders.
You can test it.

After datarecovery, you can try to fix your errors by running chkdsk.
Before you can run it, you should create another partition and format your affected disk.
Open a console or terminal with administratorprivileges.
Run:

Code: Select all

chkdsk driveletter: /r
Parameter /r tries to recover data from bad secors and marks bad secors.
Windows will not use them anymore.

Hm, perhaps I should hold that off until after I send the external disk back for the warranty. If they can't fix it to normal, then I'll do data retrieval myself (if they haven't done that for me first).

Is there any chance the external disc could be still used, after all data is recovered and stored in another hard disc (total reformat)?

I assume, If you send it in, you should be sure that's a warranty case.
Datarecovery is different and hdd manufacturer recommend, you should backup your data.
But I'm not sure what buffalo does?
Also it might be possible if they replace your disk, that your data are vanished?
That's why datarecovery should be done first.
Save your screenshot from crystaldiskinfo as evidence.
Might be more clearly if you'd run hdtune and an error scan.

If chkdsk works and all sectors are repaired, it might be possible?
But often after a while it might be possible that the error can occur again?
Also have a look into your eventviewer (windows search / eventvwr) and under system, do you discover any messages relating to your disk?
