How to recover a partition from image.dd file

#1 Post by qiplayer »

Hi I had a shutdown and lost all data on my ssd where the win7 install was.
Windows cudn't access the SSd anymore. Checking with testdisk it came out that the filesystem was broken.
I tryed to recover it but without success.

Made an image and now I'm extracting 250gigs of files wich won't be of much use due to the randomness.

I would like to put the image back the to the SSd and make it run to boot the system. How can i do that?

The last time I used an image was to create a copy of a cd, it should be possible with SSd too.

Thanks for your replies.

This seems a powerful tool, a manual would be very helpful.

I've removed your crosspost, 1 topic might be good.

You'll find some information about Image.dd here:
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Image_Creation
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Media_Image

Please note: It isn't advisable to recover an image back to an affected disk!
What's the reason, why you aren't running a normal diagnose on your affected disk?
Did you achieve errors like bad secors and testdisk was hanging due to a damaged file system?
If your file system is faulty, you'd need datarecovery software.
PhotoRec might be able to recover files from a damaged file system.
As described in these links above, you can mount an imgage using photorec too.
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Step_By_Step

Somehing to check using testdisk:
Did you run Analyse, Quick and Deeper Search?
Did you have a try to list your data from all found partitions?
Sometimes it was helpful to rebuild a boot sectore running testdisk / advanced / boot.
TestDisk is a partition recovery tool.
If you can't access any data, datarecovery software might be helpful.

Hi Fiona thanks much for your reply.

The status of my ssd after the pc shutdown (by itself) was, not beeing able to boot from that ssd install. Not able to recover with cd. i booted on one other SSD and saw windows telling that that SSD, needed to be formatted.

I tried to rescue the data through testdisk, but there isn't an option "rescue data" I tried all sort of things, I cudn't get a list of files because it said smt was damaged. So I made a backup image.

Now I just need to use this image (no more no less) and restoring it to another drive. I have 8 drives I'm here because I look for how to do it. If it doesn't work on that one I will do it on oneother.

But I need instructions IF IT IS POSSIBLE on how to put back the data of the image on a ssd.

I meanwhile have formatted that ssd and can use it without problems. I don't think it's faulty but only that it got corrupted because of the instantly power loss.

Im now recoveryng files since about 20 hours, and it's at 2/3 of the process.

from the link you posted, by
"To recover files from a media image, run photorec image.dd to carve a raw disk image"

I don't understand "to carve a raw disk image", and also I don't understand what is meant with "run photorec image.dd". It means to run image.dd with photorec? I'm dooing that...

Im getting 300 gigs of files in a random order sorted randomly under unknown folders. Yes I find my data but not the windows install.

Is it possible that the names of folder went lost? Is that the filesystem (I don't remember exactly what it said that was broken)

Have you already tried these steps?
http://www.ehow.com/how_7267865_restore ... ux-dd.html

Did you already run testdisk and deeper search to find more partitions and did you try to rebuild your boot sector running Advanced / Boot and RebuildBS.
Your affected partition must be selected
In rare cases RebuildBS made data visible.
If you use an image, you should choose partition table type "None".

Fiona I don't know how to use the image to have back files and folders. Im getting files in numerate folders, nothing that can be used to be run as OS.
