Recover data lost when reinstalling Windows 7 over Ubuntu

My laptop had Ubuntu operating system running on it and I asked my brother to erase it and install Windows 7 over it. He mistakenly thought I had already backed up all my files (which I didn't) so I lost a lot of data I had previously stored while running Ubuntu. Can I use restore my files with TestDisk? Should I use the TestDisk for Windows or Ubuntu? I tried to create a log using TestDisk for windows and it only shows the info that was created since installing Windows 7.
