Removed & created partition and filesystem - can I recover?

#1 Post by pjrettin »

I had an NTFS partition on my HD with data.

I then deleted the partition and created an ext4 partition and filesystem in its place.

I haven't written any data to the HD.

Is it possible for me to recover my old NTFS partition and data? What is the likelyhood of recovery?

Run TestDisk, Analyze, Search, Quick Search, the NTFS partition should be listed, set all the partition to keep as P'rimary), *(bootable) or L(ogical).

Not sure what to do now... here are the steps I've taken:

1. The analyse step gave me this:

1 P Linux 0 1 1 121601 80 63 1953525105 [Backup 1.1 (fai
No partition is bootable

2. When I do a Quick Search, I get this warning:

Disk /dev/sde - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - CHS 121601 255 63

Warning: the current number of heads per cylinder is 255
but the correct value may be 16.
You can use the Geometry menu to change this value.
It's something to try if
- some partitions are not found by TestDisk
- or the partition table can not be written because partitions overlaps.

And the following result:

Disk /dev/sde - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - CHS 121601 255 63
Partition Start End Size in sectors
>* Linux 0 1 1 121601 254 63 1953536067 [Backup 1.1 (fail]

3. I then choose a Deeper Search and get this warning:

Disk /dev/sde - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - CHS 121601 255 63

Warning: the current number of heads per cylinder is 255
but the correct value may be 16.

I hit continue and get this:

Disk /dev/sde - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - CHS 121601 255 63
Partition Start End Size in sectors

HPFS - NTFS 0 32 33 121601 25 24 1953519616 [Backup 1.1]

Structure: Ok. Use Up/Down Arrow keys to select partition.
Use Left/Right Arrow keys to CHANGE partition characteristics:
*=Primary bootable P=Primary L=Logical E=Extended D=Deleted
Keys A: add partition, L: load backup, T: change type, P: list files,
Enter: to continue
ext4 blocksize=4096 Large file Sparse superblock Recover, 1000 GB / 931 GiB

4. What do I do now to recover my NTFS partition and data?
