Hi Fiona, you advocate not using chkdsk -

however in many Windows systems (mine is Windows 7), if the system accidentally reboots (perhaps after a scan, or an automatic update), chkdsk might run itself - is there a way to switch off chkdsk auto-running to prevent any bad thing from being written ?

Thanks !

If a computer reboots, and chkdsk will start (Autochk) as usually you can stop it pressing any key during 10 seconds (should be standard).
My advice is, just watch your restart!
On the other hand you can start your command prompt as admin and write;
chkntfs driveletter: /x to switch it off.
I assume it was;
chkntfs driveletter: /d to set it back?
