NAS Issues

#1 Post by agcereniv »

Good afternoon!

I have a Seagate Freeagent 1.5TB drive that has been connected to my router for NAS. It started to have readability issues - could be seen, but not read or written to. I don't know if the problem pre-dated that, or was caused by the fact that I didn't eject it from the router before pulling the USB out. So, now attached to my PC, it reads as RAW.

I downloaded and ran TestDisk (twice) and it can't find the partition. It is also giving an error about HD sectors being 63 instead of 32. Below is the full log - since I'm not getting the response the instructions say I should, I don't know how to proceed.

Thoughts?

Thank you!

Log (drive in question is F):

Can you repeat your diagnose selecting disk instead of your drive?
Same thing like already mentioned here:
http://forum.cgsecurity.org/phpBB3/post ... tml#p15666
Partition table type (auto): None
Drive F: - 1500 GB / 1397 GiB
Partition table type: Intel

Analyse Drive F: - 1500 GB / 1397 GiB - CHS 182401 255 63
TestDisk displayed already the right partition table type "None", because you have selected your Drive instead of your disk.
A drive or partition doesn't contain any partition table.
Only the MBR or GUID partition table (GPT) does.
TestDisk detects the partition table type automatically and should only be changed if you're sure that's wrong.

Ok, that seems to have worked. It found the partition and I can review the files. However, it says "Write isn't available because the partition table type "None" has been selected."

I noticed that I could select and copy files while viewing. Would you recommend trying to repair the MBR, or just copy out what I need then reformat the drive? Fortunately, there's very little that is in red, and nothing critical at first glance. It would be better if I could repair it, as it is several GB worth of data to copy out.

Thank you!

Red files are recently deleted files.
If you don't need them, you can press h for hide.

Please run another diagnose, selecting your disk and the next step if testdisk detects your partition table type as None, change it to Intel.
So "Write" should be available.
For diagnosing purposes, don't confirm at Write and copy and paste the content of your testdisk.log first.
Also a screen shot of your disk management console providing info about your current affected disk would be appreciated too!
Some info from your first post:
So, now attached to my PC, it reads as RAW.
If a partition appears as RAW means, a partition is available but format (file system like FAT, NTFS etc..) is not recognized.
Problem could be boot sector, file system and not correct partition in your partition table.
If you have a partition indicates that you already have a partition table and therefore a MBR too.
Newer computer using often GPT?

Ok, here's the log with those changes - it found the LBA in a quick search, so I haven't had it do a Deeper Search. Let me know if that should happen.

Screen shot of disk management window is attached.

About the deleted files (red font), I'm pretty sure those weren't intentionally deleted, but they are more legacy, so it shouldn't be a problem if they can't be recovered.

About GPT, I don't think so. I had formatted one partition on the drive then attached it to the router - no other modifications to the partitions of it after that point.

Thanks for your information!
Your disk management console doesn't display anything unusual and is Ok!
I found some differences between your partition table and the one testdisk found.
The length is different.
Your partition in your partition table:
Current partition structure:
check_FAT: Unusual media descriptor (0xf0!=0xf8)
Warning: number of sectors per track mismatches 32 (FAT) != 63 (HD)
1 * FAT32 0 1 1 182401 79 63 2930277042 [CERENMEDIA]
And your partition found by testdisk:
Results
* FAT32 LBA 0 1 1 182401 254 63 2930288067 [CERENMEDIA]
FAT32, blocksize=32768, 1500 GB / 1397 GiB
You can compare the red values!
If the length of your FAT32 LBA-partition is not correct, it can cause messages like unusual media descryptor.
Following instruction only if you were able to list your files!
TestDisk found your partition exactly Intel standard.
That's why I would suggest to write your found partition into your partition table using the menu Write!
Actually if Intel is choosen it should work.
If not, please let me know!
Sometimes background processes like Antivirus can prevent testdisk to write your partition into your partition table.
Please try again.
If it works for you, quit testdisk and restart your computer.
If chkdsk would appear (autochk) during startup, please hit any key to stop it!

Ok, I told it to Write, and restarted. Windows still does not recognize the structure and says it needs to be formatted. I'll pull back up the tutorial I was using since I think we're back on track and see what that says.

If you have insight, I'm listening and will try again as soon as I can.

Thank you!

Is your partition written correctly?
Please copy and paste the content of your testdisk.log containing information of testdisk Analyse and your current partition structur.
If a partition appears as RAW, could be a problem with your boot sector and your file system also.
Please run testdisk, Advanced and boot and copy and paste the content of your testdisk.log.
It displays info about your current boot sector.
Don't use Repair FAT to avoid anything changed to your file system!
Maybe you could run a Rebuild BS but until yet, don't use the menu Write.
It's for diagnosis purposes only.

Further info will follow.

Ok, if I am following you correctly, here is the log for the Advanced/Boot. Please let me know if it also contains the partition information for which you are looking.

A valid FAT Boot sector must be present in order to access
any data; even if the partition is not bootable.
