MacOsX Disk-Utility ruined my external NTFS hard-Drive

Hello,

I have a couple of general questions reagarding testdisk.

first: i already learned that the 64bit-version may not be the optimal version for recovering my lost NTFS partition, so i'm currently re-analyzing my HDD with the 32bit version.

I wanted to create a new Mac Partition on my 2TB harddrive which had one NTFS partition. I changed the size in Windows to 1 TB and switched to Mac. there i created a Mac os Journaled HFS partitions - this is when the s*** hit the fan. for some reason a "unknown error" was declared and all partitions were gone, so for 3 days i've been trying to restore the data.
I did actually find the partitions using testdisk (SystemRescueCd, Linux, and the data using photorec) but couldnt write the partition table - probably because i was using the 64 bit version and the linux version (system rescue disk). The PhotoRec recovery saved some of the data (not all) but - of course - lost all filenames and folder structure.

regarding testdisk 7.0

-> The "quick search" took forever on my harddrive, it actually took the same time as the "deeper search" (roughly 20h for a 2 TB drive). Considering that - does it make sense to skip the "quick search" and start a deeper search immideately?
-> Does it make a difference whether the HDD is attached via USB 3.0 or eSATA?
-> is there another (maybe quicker) way to restore the partitions?
-> I'm currently running the quick search - i will upload screenshots as the scans are finished.

thanks in advance for any kind of help, i hope you guys can help me recover my pictures and music :(

greetings

Yes, you can skip (stop) the "quick" search and start the deeper search

Now i have finished the quick search, the deeper search and a partition backup.

2 Partitions were found labeled (D) MS Data, the first says (NTFS found using backup sector).
testdisk2.PNG
testdisk2.PNG (60.2 KiB) Viewed 2169 times
however when i "open" the first NTFS partition no files appear (screenshot 2):
testdisk3.PNG
testdisk3.PNG (41.2 KiB) Viewed 2169 times
the second partition is labeled only with "NTFS". however when i open it it says the filesystem is corrupted.
testdisk4.PNG
testdisk4.PNG (36.9 KiB) Viewed 2169 times
The partition table used to be standard MBR b4 Mac OS X changed it to GPT.

Any idea as to wheather there is a chance of recovering the filesystem structure (folders etc)?

thx in advance!!! :D

Hi, I'm new to testdisk and am having a similar (but different) problem.

My solution is to use the backup and recovery functions to write all the files to another brand new disk and I'll have to sort them out from there. At least I will have the files I want to keep.... And lesson learned about maintaining a consistent backup discipline.

All the best.
