TestDisk sits on "Please Wait" for an hour

I have been trying to recover a Dell Laptop drive by connecting it via USB 3.0 adapter to a good desktop. When I connect it, diskmanager eventually registers it as a disk. The main partition is RAW. and there's a chunk of unpartitioned space just as big as the Raw partition. SOmehow I doubt that. I run testdisk and get past the "create new log." And then the program sits on "Please Wait" for a long time. In the meantime, I can't even surf the internet on that computer.
Is this normal? I have closed the exe a few times thinking I'm doing something wrong. Should I just wait it out? How long should I wait? What is it doing? What should I do afterwards?
Thank you very much for your time.
Sincerely, Sean

Connect the disk directly via SATA. If the problem is still here, check the disk SMART status (use the manufacturer disk utility or google for one)
