The disk in question is a 2GB SAta disc with no operating system , my drive "D"
I need to convert the dynamic partition to basic for win 10, however testdisc detects it as having "none" partition. The drive works with no issues on my XP machine. I don't need to save dat aas I have backed it all up. What i sthe best way to create a basic partition

after lots of mucking about with diskpart and test disk I discovered a pagefile.sys file in the root. Deleted it and then windows would allow me to delete. Test disk was still confused and gave me file partition none . Problem sorted .

Did you use the latest verion of testdisk 7.1WIP and 32bit?
In disk selection you should select Disk / dev.. instead of a drive.
Example:

Hard disk list
Disk /dev/sda - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - CHS 121601 255 63, sector size=512
Disk /dev/sdb - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - CHS 121601 255 63, sector size=512
Disk /dev/sdc - 3000 GB / 2794 GiB - CHS 45600 255 63, sector size=4096
Disk \\.\PhysicalDrive2 - 3000 GB / 2794 GiB - CHS 45600 255 63, sector size=4096
Drive C: - 981 GB / 913 GiB - CHS 119300 255 63, sector size=512
Drive E: - 320 GB / 298 GiB - CHS 38913 255 63, sector size=512
Drive F: - 3000 GB / 2794 GiB - CHS 45598 255 63, sector size=4096

If you have backed up all data, you can use the windows disk management console to convert your disk to MBR.
In the small square at the left side of your disk you can right click into it and clicking on convert to MBR.
A handycap is, you have to delete all partitions in advance, to get it converted.
In TestDisk, if your partition is displayed and you can list your files, you can write a partition table containing your partition into the MBR.
After closing testdisk and restart your PC, your disk will be recognized as a basic MBR disk.
If you have a single partition only, there shouldn't be any problem.
For someone who has more partitions, some more info might be required.

I am not a software person so would have liked a tool than does not require a degree in Computer Science . Manged to do it by myself at end of the day

Easily select your disk instead of a drive and confirm through to Analyse and Quick Search.
It's intended as a diagnose only and nothing would be changed.
In your testdisk folder you'll find a text-file called testdisk.log.
You can open it using wordpad and copy and paste the content of your log file into your next post.
So I'll be able to guide you through, step by step.
