Lol, you just understand why professionnal DR on damaged hard drive can cost hundreds of $...

First, add -n to your ddrescue line.
Also, try with -d, sometimes slower, but better.
In a separated terminal, run

Code: Select all

watch 'dmesg | tail'
, looking at kernel messages, you'll soon learn to anticipate disk failure.
When you have done 10 first gigs, go further somewhere the disk is in better condition first ( add -i 50G for example).

If you have latest version of ddrescue (1.14 or more) you can use -R to do reverse copy, and combination with -s to limit high value (like -i but in the other way).

Good week-end...

In my opinion, only good script you can do there is "the computer does an action when disk disconnect (beeps, mail, stops and so on...)". If you found time to do this, please release it as opensource script, I'll thank you every day of my life.

I haven't messed with it for a few days, but I initially tried your parameters..neither gave anything. The program just spat out some text, and went right back to the prompt. I tried each seperately, same thing..took them out and it worked as before.

I may have to work on a script, but I'm so, so rusty..its been years..

we need a conditional loop to run the ddrescue blah blah command, if it fails
go to fdisk loop, and check the output of fdisk for /dev/sdx1 or whatever. I'm not familiar with the usage of GREP, but I"m sure it would help in this area..if GREP'ed data not found..run fdisk again, check again..loop
if fdisk finds the required text, run ddrescue blah blah again..

Lynny

Perhaps, with my bad english, you did not understand what I mean : there is NO solution to your de-connexion problem. This is related to your hardware. Perhaps check your cable, but very probable it's the hardisk.
The option -n and -d help with ddrescue copy of DD in bad condition, but you won't have another solution than staying loooooong time near your computer to unplug/replug your hardisk. Just because most of time your disk won't be self recognized and need to be power off.

Or a script that have ability to cut the power of the disk ?

Your english is fine, I understood. I was just trying to come up with ideas for how to script the process..brainstorming..

It has always come back without having to power cycle the drive...at least so far..so a script, like I said that would check fdisk output to see when it was back, could work...at the moment anyway...I'm getting tired of messing with it..but I hate to lose all my music. :(

Because I've a DR Cie, and I have a price policy that give easy access to those who are not professional with lot of money... But I'm in France.

Did you check you sata/power cables ? I've seen another thread there where I told that was hardware related and the problem was due to bad sata cable. Few probability, but....
