HDD with 3 partions can any access and copy file of 2 partio

#1 Post by frevab »

Hi there. I can use some help.
I have an internal HDD which says need formatting but it was fine before. I have connect it now as a external drive and am running TestDisk for about a week now as it takes a lot of time to work on a 1TB disk and there are a lot of menu options in TestDisk that start intensive reading the this large disk.

The first time I ran TestDisk it came up with a partion list that was how I remembered the HDD to be partioned: 3 partions, the C partion with the OS, and then two other partions with data and media (I have connected this HDD now as an external HDD with the drive lettter G):

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Drive G: - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - CHS 15200 255 63

Partition Start End Size in sectors
> 1 * HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 15138 53 41 243195287
2 P HPFS - NTFS 15138 62 29 27886 116 6 204800000
3 P HPFS - NTFS 27886 116 7 121600 254 63 1505524161
----------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Drive G: - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - CHS 15200 255 63
Current partition structure:
Partition Start End Size in sectors

Invalid NTFS or EXFAT boot
1 * HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 15138 53 41 243195287
1 * HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 15138 53 41 243195287
Invalid NTFS or EXFAT boot
2 P HPFS - NTFS 15138 62 29 27886 116 6 204800000
2 P HPFS - NTFS 15138 62 29 27886 116 6 204800000
Invalid NTFS or EXFAT boot
3 P HPFS - NTFS 27886 116 7 121600 254 63 1505524161
3 P HPFS - NTFS 27886 116 7 121600 254 63 1505524161
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now when I do a new the result come back as:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Drive G: - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - CHS 15200 255 63
Partition Start End Size in sectors
>* HPFS - NTFS 1892 71 36 3485 205 48 25600000
P HPFS - NTFS 3485 205 49 15200 35 3 188190720

Structure: Ok. Use Up/Down Arrow keys to select partition.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

When press P to list in one of the two partitions, it comes up with a list of the files in that partition that I recognize as files and directories that were there before the problem started.
However, the first partition with the OS on it (and some files I need) does not appear any more.
The partition that started at 0 and ended at 15138 has now gone and the first partition it found starts at 1892.
What happened to the first primary partition????

I have copied all the files from the 2nd and 3rd partition successfully but want to recover some files that are on the primary partition like my Outlook files and CIEL files in a specific directory from my book keeping software.
Who do I go about it to find them?

Can you run testdisk on your disk instead of your drive?
Under disk selection your disk would look like "Disk /dev/sda .
TestDisk 7.1WIP 32bit is recommended.

Hi Fiona

I don't know How to do that. If I install the HDD in the PC I cannot run Windows. I can only access it as a an external drive. Or perhaps install the HDD in my PC and run TestDisk 7.1 as a dos version with a boot-disk?

Or do you mean copy TestDisk.exe onto the drive (partition that is accessible) and run TestDisk from there?

You should use TestDisk 7.1WIP 32bit.
Have another try to select your disk under testdisk disk selection as Disk /dev/sd* (*=a, b, c) instead of Drive G:.
When testdisk hangs, please let me know.
In case, the next step would be to use a LiveCD like Knoppix.
Info will follow.
Under windows:
Have another try to run a diagnose on your USB port as far as possible and copy and paste the content of your testdisk.log into your next post.
You'll find it within your testdisk folder and you can open it using wordpad.

Hi Fiona

Used TestDisk 7.1 WIN

This is the partition structure that I remember as being the correct one as I have partioned this HDD":
Disk /dev/sdb - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - CHS 15200 255 63
Current partition structure:
Partition Start End Size in sectors

Invalid NTFS or EXFAT boot
1 * HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 15138 53 41 243195287
1 * HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 15138 53 41 243195287
Invalid NTFS or EXFAT boot
2 P HPFS - NTFS 15138 62 29 27886 116 6 204800000
2 P HPFS - NTFS 15138 62 29 27886 116 6 204800000
Invalid NTFS or EXFAT boot
3 P HPFS - NTFS 27886 116 7 121600 254 63 1505524161
3 P HPFS - NTFS 27886 116 7 121600 254 63 1505524161

Why does TestDisk come up with
Disk /dev/sdb - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - CHS 15200 255 63
Partition Start End Size in sectors
>* HPFS - NTFS 1892 71 36 3485 205 48 25600000
P HPFS - NTFS 3485 205 49 15200 35 3 188190720

I need to be able to recover some files on the partition #1 of the first list.
How can this be done?

Log attached.

Re: HDD with 3 partions can any access and copy file of 2 pa

#6 Post by frevab »

Just to inform this forum that I managed to recover the files I wanted to recover from the HD. As described in my initial post the HD in my PC wanted to be formatted where it was working fine before. The only thing I did was disconnect the IDE cable and plug another HDD to the IDE kabel to uprade the Windows OS on my daughters PC. When I swapped the HD back again (after shutting the PC off before ofcourse) it came up with this formatting question making it impossible to access anymore.

I tries the TestDisk and PhotoRec to recover files. the HDD in question had 3 partitions. One partition was the primary with the Windows o/s, the other 2 partitions were just for data. However some software had stored their files on the partition (like MS Outlook and some special software).
With TestDisk I could access and copy files from the other 2 partitions but TestDisk could not let me access the files on the primary partition.

After many weeks (TestDisk took a lot of time every time I ran it) I googled the next step of rebuilding the MBR and found the following website: http://html5.litten.com/how-to-fix-exte ... ecame-raw/
As stated on this webpage "A RAW filesystem simply means that it is a filesystem that is not recognized by Windows" The article suggested to access the disk using Linux o/s. So I put the HDD back in the PC (was recovering it as an external HDD on another computer) and downloaded and booted the PC with the PartedMagic Linux Boot CD. Without to much hassle I could access the C partition. I am not very familiar with Linux so could not mount a USB back-up disk to copy the files to, so I copied the files from the C partition to another partition on the same HDD of which I knew TestDisk can access it and then copied the files using TestDisk in the Windows world to another HDD.

The webpage explains everything in clear plain English.

I just want to share my experience with solving the problem I had with the HDD that said "disk not formatted. Do you want to format it"

I thank everyone who replied to my posy for their help.
