VERY SLOW GPT SCAN on a 5TB Disk

#1 Post by fawasme »

Hi,

Could you guys help me out how to improve the revoery of several partitions, some HFS Mac and some NTFS on a 5tb USB 3.0 Drive?. A friend of mine unplugged the hard disk while doing a Windows Checkdisk and the Partitions are now gone.

All I see is a "Recovery" Partition listed as MS Data, don't really know what kind of recovery this Partition is....it's a 32GB Partition. Probably whoever formatted my drive left that partition there, don't know.

The thing is the harddisk scanned for lost partitions for 24 hours now and its on 5% only!

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge with this guy! :-)

JP.-

The drive seems to be physically fine, does not make any sounds like there is something wrong with it. Any suggestions?

On EFI GPT partitions are listed as MS Data.
When you select a partition, at the bottom of the testdisk display, you´ll find info about your boot sector or superblock and file system.
TestDisk detects your partition table as Intel and not EFI GPT.
It's probably the cause, why your GUID partition table is listed as invalid.
Partition table type (auto): Intel
Disk \\.\PhysicalDrive2 - 5000 GB / 4657 GiB
Partition table type: EFI GPT

Bad GPT partition, invalid signature.
Trying alternate GPT
Bad GPT partition, invalid signature.
Current partition structure:
Bad GPT partition, invalid signature.
Trying alternate GPT
Bad GPT partition, invalid signature.
On windows 7 and servicepack 1, TestDisk 7.1WIP 32bit is recommended.
Can you repeat your diagnose without changing the partition table type to EFI GPT?
A scan would be much faster and I'd get more info about your current partition structure (partition table) and watch, is your partition table still invalid?
Did you remove your disk out of the enclosure?
Info about TestDisk / Analyse and your current partition structure would be important too.
Although Intel MBR supports only disks up to 2.2 TB but with 4k sector size, larger disk size can be supportd too.
You can check the partition table type under windows, running the disk management console and select your disk and right click into the left small square at the left.
If there is a description like convert it to GPT, you have an Intel MBR disk.
When there is a description like convert to MBR, your disk is already GPT.
Even if it's grayed out, which only means, that you already have some partitions on your disk.
Until yet, you shouldn't change anything and it's intended as a diagnose only.
