BTW, ever since I changed cables and plugs, it has been working fine. The HD hasn't been disconnecting and it has been just fine. So I don't think it is an unsolvable physical problem. Is there still a fix for corrupted partition?

Unbelievable, but lucky. Give another try to testdisk. What was your OS, where was your disk formated (windows, mac, linux ?)
