TestDisk or Photorec for recovering iMovie06 (.DV) files from formatted drive? (Mac)

#1 Post by perpendicular »

Hello,

I had two HDDs in my Mac. One with my DV-files (ready cut files from iMovie06 projects) and one that was empty. I wrote files for testing purposes on the empty disk, then wanted to delete it, to sell it afterwards. Unfortunately since I had been moving arround a lot of stuff this evening I chose the wrong 2TB drive of the two present in Disk Utility... and I formatted the drive with the cut DV files. Yes I know, you have to have backups (that would have been the next step).
I even did a more stupid move; I aborted the formatting (I think the correct english word is partitioning?).

I then tried Stellar Pheonix Mac data recovery, it even recovered files I had deleted long time ago. However, while the DV files all had the right size, it was black and white noise (as in no picture), with about 1-2sec. of one movie in it. Interestingly not the movie the file was named after.

Would it make sense to try TestDisk or PhotoRec?
If so, which one? Since Photorec can recover .DV -> http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/File_For ... Multimedia but I wonder, if TestDisk was more apt, since I formatted the drive.

Would it make sense to try Data Rescue 3 ? Since it claims to do different things than other Mac recovery tools. Well marketing speech... and probably all claim this. https://www.prosofteng.com/data-rescue-3/ (für das Marketing blabla weiter runterscrollen bis unter das zwiete Foto "why is...")

problem: formateed drive that had data on it. aborted formatting.
Filesystem: HFS+
Partition scheme: Apple partition scheme (not GUID!)
HDD: 2TB, SATA
formatted in a PowerPC-Mac (PowerMac G4 via SATA-PCIx-Card)
things tried: Stellar Phoenix Mac Data recovery, once under 10.10 Intel and once under 10.4 or 10.5 PPC.

As you have reformated the disk, try PhotoRec instead of TestDisk.
