How long to recover a damaged disk?

#1 Post by rfdesigner »

Hi.

I'm trying out testdisk as I have a damaged HDD from my wifes laptop. Currently test disk has got as far as cylinder 44/60800 and it's taken over an hour to get that far.. if that's a linear trend then it's going to take two months.

Test disk couldn't see a partition on the drive, so I've allowed it to analyse it to see what might be recoverable.

I suspect the heads may have impacted the platter, so it could just be a dead head.. i.e. unrecoverable without the lid off, but I've also seen a few moments where the test seemed to rattle quite quickly through several cylinders suggesting that at some positions data might be recoverable.

For the record, having this professionally sorted isn't worth it.. it's at the last chance saloon.

so how long should this normally take?

Is there some read error messages ?
Does the disk make some unusual noise / clicking sound ?
