Testdisk doesn't write partition information after reboot

#1 Post by chewchewchew »

Before I get into it, I have tried the following programs to fix my problem:

Image

Only Disktest found my lost partitions, but the "Write" command doesn't change the disk after "OK" and reboot of the system.

System: Win10
Disk structure:

Problem: I took a perfectly good Toshiba USB 3TB drive, broke the case and put the drive (mostly full), inside my system and the drive came up as raw/unallocated:

I ran TestDisk 7.0 and it found the lost partition (it was one that spanned the drive) and all the files:

I selected "Write" and "Y" and "Ok" and rebooted the machine. Nothing had been written. and nothing had changed.

Twist

I then found and ran testdisk-7.1-WIP.win64 and it finds the partition:

But then it gorks when trying to find the files:

Question

1. Am I doing this right? Should I choose different options?
2. Can I somehow fix the filesystem so that 7.1 can find the files/folders that 7.0 could?
3. General advice is welcome!!!

If you run testdisk 7.0, Advanced, Boot, List, do you still see your files ?
Can you also try testdisk 7.1-WIP 32 bits ?

YES, List shows all my folders and files

This is the screen of when I choose "Boot":

Can you also try testdisk 7.1-WIP 32 bits ?

Same results as 7.0.

NOTE I tried the "Analyze" and "Write" function with 7.1-WIP 32 bit, with no result after "Ok" and reboot.

FYI: Because of your software, I can at least now recover the files onto another drive. My hope is that I can fix the partition so that I don't have to copy to a new drive, pave the drive and copy it all back. Still, thanks for your excellent program! I donated 15 euros (not sure what that is in $... :)) I'd rather donate to you than pay Minitool their ransome. Please keep up the good work!
