The harddisk seems too small

#1 Post by binyomin »

Hi,

I am trying to recover an NTFS harddisk through Ubuntu Linux with testdisk. I got the following mesage:

Code: Select all

TestDisk 6.14, Data Recovery Utility, July 2013
Christophe GRENIER <grenier@cgsecurity.org>
http://www.cgsecurity.org

Disk /dev/sdd - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - CHS 121601 255 63

The harddisk (1000 GB / 931 GiB) seems too small! (< 2871 GB / 2674 GiB)
Check the harddisk size: HD jumpers settings, BIOS detection...

The following partitions can't be recovered:
Partition Start End Size in sectors
> HPFS - NTFS 121600 254 63 243201 253 61 1953520001
   FAT16 <32M 305787 165 10 349124 17 48 696199620

[ Continue ]
I got stuck with what to do in such a situation. Could you please help me how to correct the errors?

I am attaching the testdisk.log file below.

Code: Select all

TestDisk exited normally.
Furthermore, I am experiencing "pre-failure" attributes for SMART control for "Raw Read Error Rate", "Spin-Up Time" and "Reallocated Sector Count", which is somewhat scary, considering that I bought the HDD in last February and I really wasn't using it that much, just backing up some data every 2-3 months or so. Maybe I should claim the shop to change it using my warranty?

Thank you very much,
Binyomin

The partition table is ok. The NTFS boot sector is ok. TestDisk has been able to list the files.
If you are under Linux, you can use TestDisk, Advanced, List and copy the files.
Under Windows, run (right click run as administrator) "cmd", "chkdsk /f d:" (replace d: by the correct drive letter).

Thank you very much! If I understand your answer, I should make a copy of all the files to another hard disk and after that I should correct the error? How can I correct it? By formatting the disk again by some tool? Which tool (I am using Linux)?
