Healthy, Active...

#1 Post by KDMcMullan »

I've used TestDisk a few times to dig me out of a hole. This one has me stumped.

A system has two hard drives. One is used for the OS and apps. The other for user files. I've pulled the OS drive out and replaced it with an SSD. I've installed Windows 7.

Now, the "user" drive (a 250Gb drive, partitioned as a single Primary partition) doesn't work. Windows Disk Management reports it as "232.89GB RAW Healthy (Active, Primary Partition)". When I click the drive (it's mapped as F: in Explorer), I'm told "f:\ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect." This smells to me like the disk has been partitioned, but not formatted. But I know that it contains a truckload of photos and user data.

TestDisk reports (after a deep search) "No partition found or selected for recovery."

I know this disk is FULL of data. Is there enough information here, or what other digging can I do?

Thanks.

PS - on exiting TestDisk, I've observed that it says "Invalid NTFS or EXFAT boot". I hadn't noticed that when I ran the tool.

Do you have any suggestions, please?

Thanks,.

Run "cmd" (right click Run As Administrator) and "chkdsk /f f:". What is the result ?
If it doesn't work, please post the testdisk.log file content. It will be easier to help you with the information it contains.

CHKDSK /F returns:

Code: Select all

The type of the file system is RAW.
CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.
If I do a scan and a deep scan for partition tables, it looks like this:

I can't quite decipher it, but I think I'm being told that there's no evidence of ever being a partition on that disk.

Can you help, please with a recovery suggestion? I know the disk is physically healthy and that it's virtually full of files.

Thanks.

Run TestDisk, go in the Advanced menu, select the NTFS partition, choose RebuildBS, List.
If you can see your files, choose Write, confirm, Quit and restart your computer.
If you can't see your files, please copy/paste the new testdisk.log file content.

That yielded up no files (other than . and ..)

It's possible that this was a FAT32 drive. I can't remember if it should be FAT32 or FAT32LBA. I will be out now for a few days, but here's the logfile. I tried both FAT32 and FAT32LBA as well as NTFS (as NTFS only showed . and ..)

I stopped one of the searches partway as I ran out of time. I edited for brevity. I hope my edits are appropriate.

Would appreciate any more insight, please.

Am I right in thinking the contents of the drive are lost?
